If you're planning a bathroom remodel in St. George, Hurricane, Cedar City, Ivins, Orderville, or Washington, the tile is the part everyone notices. The waterproofing behind it is the part that determines whether that tile is still there in ten years.
At Prudence Construction, waterproofing isn't an afterthought we add if a customer asks — it's part of every walk-in shower, tub surround, and steam shower we build. Here's what that actually involves.
Membrane systems, not just a coat of sealant We install waterproofing and membrane systems using Schluter and Laticrete products, the industry standards for shower and wet-area protection. These systems create a continuous barrier behind the tile — at the walls, the floor, the corners, and every custom niche or shelf we build in. A single gap in that barrier is where water damage starts, so we treat the membrane work with the same care as the finish tile itself.
Where this matters most
- Walk-in showers: no curb, no door track, more exposed area for water to find a way in if the membrane isn't done right.
- Custom shower niches and shelves: every cut and seam is a potential failure point unless it's properly sealed.
- Steam showers: constant moisture and heat put more stress on a membrane than a standard shower ever will, which is why steam shower waterproofing gets extra attention in our process.
- Heat-resistant tile behind ranges: a different kind of protection, but the same principle — the surface has to hold up to what's actually going to hit it.
Slip resistance matters as much as waterproofing For bathroom floors, walk-in showers, and outdoor or pool surround tile, we install slip-resistant tile that meets DCOF standards, and ADA-compliant tile where the project calls for it — common on commercial jobs for resorts, golf courses, and hotels around Southern Utah, as well as residential projects where a homeowner wants a safer floor.
Large-format and natural stone need their own approach Porcelain, ceramic, and natural stone — travertine, slate, marble — each move and set differently, and large-format tile in particular needs the substrate and waterproofing prepped correctly before a single tile goes down. Skipping that step is where a lot of tile failures start, regardless of how good the tile itself looks on day one.
Outdoor and pool tile Southern Utah's outdoor tile and pool surround work has to deal with sun, temperature swings, and constant water exposure. We install non-slip outdoor tile surfaces and pool coping built for that environment, not just tile that looks right in a showroom.
If you're planning a kitchen backsplash, a full bathroom remodel, or a commercial floor tile project anywhere in St. George, Hurricane, Cedar City, Ivins, Orderville, or Washington, UT, the waterproofing and substrate work is where the job either holds up or doesn't. That's where we start every project.
